Opalton is one of the oldest and most famous opal fields in Queensland, Australia. Discovered in 1888, it became legendary for producing the largest piece of opal ever recorded—a pipe opal over 3 meters long! Today, it remains the heart of boulder opal country, known for its remote, rugged beauty and high-quality gems.
We are based in the Opalton district, roughly 124km south-west of Winton, Queensland. This area is part of the “Winton Formation,” a geological region millions of years old that is the only place on Earth where true Boulder Opal is found.
About Our Opals
Boulder Opal is a unique variety of opal that forms in thin veins inside ironstone boulders. Unlike other opals, it is cut with the natural ironstone still attached to the back. This provides a dark, earthy background that makes the opal’s “play of color” appear more vivid and protects the stone, making it incredibly durable.
We only sell 100% natural, solid Australian Boulder Opals. We do not sell doublets or triplets (which are thin slices glued to backings). When you buy from the Opalton Boulder Crew, you are getting a genuine piece of the Australian outback.
Opals are “living” stones—their colors change depending on the light and angle. We take our photos in natural light to show the stone’s full range. While we strive for 100% accuracy, please keep in mind that different phone and computer screens may display colors slightly differently.

To keep our service personal and ensure you get the exact stone you want, we handle all sales via our Contact Form. Simply list the name or ID of the opal you are interested in, and we will get back to you with availability, a total price (including shipping), and payment details.
Many of our stones are sold as “freeform” polished gems ready for setting. If you have a specific vision or would like to know if a stone is suitable for a ring or pendant, mention it in your contact form! We love helping customers find the right “fit” for their project.
Once you contact us, we will provide a secure payment link or bank transfer details. We ship both within Australia and internationally using tracked, insured postal services to ensure your treasure arrives safely.
Opal Care
Boulder Opal is one of the hardiest types of opal due to its ironstone backing. You can clean it with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners, and your opal will remain vibrant for generations.
Yes! Because Boulder Opal is backed by ironstone, it is much more resistant to cracking than “crystal” or “white” opals. It is perfect for everyday jewelry like rings and pendants.
